Renovation work to commence on Arcola Theatre

Over one year ago we hastily converted the basement, ground and first floors of the Colourworks building with the aid of many volunteers and the financial assistance of Arcola’s loyal patrons. We love our new building, but it’s still a bit rough around the edges, even for us!

We are therefore delighted to announce that Arts Council England has awarded £1 million in capital funding (in addition to their support of our artistic and creative learning programmes) to undertake the most urgently required works to improve the function, comfort and accessibility of the building.

What will change?

  • We will be installing new windows, heating and ventilation
  • Studio 2 will be lowered one floor into the basement and all dressing rooms and back-of-house areas will be expanded and refurbished
  • We will be adding a new staircase and a new wheelchair lift to serve all floors

Will the ‘Arcola feel’ be lost?

  • No. There is lots of work to be done and not enough money to do it, so fear not, we will be re-using, recycling and calling on the services of volunteers once more. But we promise that there will be nice toilets and a more spacious foyer!

When will this happen?

From June – October 2012, Arcola Theatre productions will be relocated to Arcola Tent at 2 Ashwin Street (season print out soon). During that period it will be business as usual if you would like to book by phone or online. At the Tent, we will also have a box office, which will be open from 6pm and upgraded facilities for artists and audiences.

Final details are being worked out – we will keep you posted.

In the meantime, if you would like to get involved, email build@arcolatheatre.com. When we moved to the Colourworks building, over 1,000 people got involved.
