These Trees Are Made of Blood

by Paul Jenkins

Directed by Amy Draper

“And for our next act …
The Magical Military Junta …
Will make 30,000 people disappear before your very eyes.”

Step into Buenos Aires for this immersive theatrical experience, which pulls back the curtain on a secretive state, and shines the spotlight on a powerful act of resistance.

These Trees are Made of Blood is a political musical cabaret set in the heart of Argentina’s Dirty War.

Spectacular, arresting and totally unique, it follows one mother’s extraordinary quest to take on the authorities and find her ‘disappeared’ daughter.

Following a sold-out premiere in 2015, this reworked production – featuring original live music, magic and movement – lights up the Arcola for four weeks only.

Listen to a taster from the original soundtrack and come inside the Coup Coup Club…

‘The songs and lyrics channel Kurt Weill and Trey Parker – always hilarious and frequently unsettling.’ – The Upcoming

★★★★★ Dark, loud and hot
—London Economic
★★★★★ Spectacular tale expertly woven
—West End Wilma
★★★★ Played with sensational passion, virtuosity and sensitivity...A magnificent, sobering, entertaining indictment that makes you want to cheer and cry with rage at the same time, its relevance is not least in the light of our own recent tragedies, political and civil.
—Woddis Reviews
★★★★ It’s ensemble performance at its zenith. Director Amy Draper is clearly one to watch.
—Morning Star
★★★★ The evening springs to life with real power
—Reviews Gate
★★★★ The multi-talented, multi-tasking cast switch from farce to tragedy and back again with jaw-dropping panache and conviction... A mutually entertaining and deeply haunting triumph.
—Fringe Frequency
A musically rousing evening – with a class band – and never loses sight of how important it is to be alert to the trickery of politicians.
—The Guardian
A necessary piece of theatre… Highly recommended
—Fringe Review
An entertaining satire, a moving and exceptionally bold attempt by Draper to deal with a very difficult subject with sensitivity and humour.
—Latino Life
Boldly conceived and executed with élan
—Broadway World
With cabaret magic, a breathtaking musical score and harrowing portrayals of ‘the Disappeared’, Amy Draper's challenging production both entertains and horrifies
