TORN

A new play by Femi Oguns
Directed by Raz Shaw

24th June - 2nd August 2008
Starting time: 8 PM
STUDIO 1

You got the Whites – they’re a collective. Then there’s the Asians – they’re unified. And then there’s us. Divided. It’s deep.’

Two London lovers.

One African.

One West-Indian.

What’s the problem?

Follow your heart or honour your family?

After the cult success of its work-in-progress production at Arcola Studio 2 last year, Torn transfers to the main house with an updated script and a new creative team. Kelle Bryan (Eternal), Jocelyn Jee Esien (Little Miss Jocelyn) and Wil Johnson (Waking the Dead) lead an all-star cast.

Sharp-tongued, witty, provocative and bold, Torn tells familiar story of star-crossed lovers against an unfamiliar backdrop - inter-racial conflict in our black communities.

Raz Shaw, who directed the critically acclaimed revival of Frank McGuinness’s Factory Girls for the Arcola in 2006, makes a welcome return.

'A powerful debut.' The Stage

'It’s because of plays like this, that the Arcola is exuding the current vibe of über-cool.'  - British Theatre Guide

'Torn is fun, funky and perfectly done: slick directing, fabulous lighting and faultless acting. Femi Oguns (writer) had written real, recognisable characters and actors had snapped them up and, you could see, enjoyed every line.' - British Theatre Guide

'Oguns’ ability to move you from laughing out loud to choking back the tears within seconds proves he’s a talent with a lot more to give.'  - What's on Stage

'The hugely likeable characters are all complex, intriguing and rich in their own culture – and the cast interact and work together in a way that’s utterly electrifying.' - What's on Stage
