Charles Court Opera presents

The Mikado

By Gilbert & Sullivan

Directed by John Savournin
Musical Direction by David Eaton

The award winning “masters of Gilbert & Sullivan in small spaces”, Charles Court Opera, present their intimate, highly successful 5 star London production of the most loved of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operas, The Mikado.
The scheming Lord High Executioner is about to hatch one plot too far, with far-reaching and hilarious consequences for everyone involved, especially when the ruler himself arrives… Gilbert’s pen was rarely sharper than when he wrote this punchy, lively satire, which contains familiar songs by Sullivan, including ”I’ve got a little list” and “The sun whose rays”, that are by turns toe-tapping and sumptuous.  Presenting this satirical farce for a modern audience, CCO’s witty, sophisticated staging places the characters at the forefront, and promises to be a treat for operetta lovers and newcomers alike.

The production is directed by G&S specialist John Savournin, whose recent main stage productions include The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore, both co-productions with Opera Holland Park, Trial by Jury for Opera North, and Iolanthe for the International G&S Festival.  Press for CCO’s The Mikado:

★★★★★ “From the opening explosion of energy this is a show that knows where it’s heading, and that’s to five-star heaven. Inventive on top of original wrapped in outrageous.” – What’s On Stage

★★★★ “The cast sings and acts with a winning blend of gusto and wit… the best place to take your Gilbert & Sullivan.” – Evening Standard

★★★★★ “This production simply cannot be bettered.” – The Spy in the Stalls

★★★★ “The Mikado is full of wit, impeccable timing and exceptional acting and singing by the energetic cast. This is a triumphant achievement both visually and musically…”
