We must not make a scarecrow of the law, Setting it up to fear the birds of prey, And let it keep one shape till custom make it Their perch, and not their terror.
Act II Scene I
The duke of Vienna appoints his deputy Angelo to exercise power in his absence… without mercy or forgiveness. But his cruel misuse of authority drags Angelo into a brutal world of temptation, lust and execution. Jack Shepherd returns to the Arcola to direct one of Shakespeare’s most provocative plays. His previous productions at the Arcola include A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Macbeth (co-directed with Mehmet Ergen). He has also directed for the Shakespeare’s Globe and the Chichester Festival Theatre.
