Arcola invites you to Playwriting Foundations – an intensive weekend masterclass, where you will be guided through the process of writing a script for an original play.
Experienced dramaturg and director Nic Connaughton will help you unpack every element of scriptwriting for stage; providing tools and exercises for aspiring writers to develop their craft. On top of receiving feedback and mentoring, you will have the chance to freely experiment with a mixture of hands-on exercises and uncensored discussions.

Nic is Head of Theatre for the Pleasance Theatre Trust, overseeing the organisations theatre programme at their London base Pleasance Islington, and at Pleasance Edinburgh every August for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He was formerly the Associate Producer at Arcola Theatre in Dalston. As a director, his productions include: The Little Prince, A Midsummer Nights Dream (both of which he also adapted), Corpus Christi (Arcola Theatre) and BOY (Arcola and Wilderness Festival). He has also directed large-scale outdoor performances in the UK and across Europe, including at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Gillet Square, Glastonbury Music and Arts Festival and
Rotterdam Summer Carnival. As a producer and dramaturg he founded and ran the PlayWROUGHT New Writing Programme from 2014-2018 which discovered and nurtured seven critically acclaimed productions including Mark Jagasia’s five-star sell-out hit Clarion (winner of two Off-West-End Awards), as well as productions eventually performed at Hampstead Downstairs, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Theatre503 and Leeds Studio.
