Arcola Theatre

Werther

Jules Massenet, French libretto by Édouard Blau, Paul Milliet and Georges Hartmann

Directed by: Aylin Bozok

“My whole being cries at it…”

Charlotte, on her mother’s deathbed, promised herself to Albert. But when the melancholy poet Werther escorts her to a ball, and Albert returns home unexpectedly, some troubling emotions begin to take hold…

Massenet’s tragic masterpiece, based on Goethe’s Sorrows of the Young Werther, is a passionate and thrilling tale of forbidden love.

This scintillating new production, created especially for Grimeborn 2014, includes original costumes by designer Bora Aksu. It is directed by Aylin Bozok, who was voted Best Newcomer in the 2013 WhatsOnStage Opera Poll for her production of Pelléas et Mélisande at last year’s Grimeborn festival:

“Stunning … the best fringe opera in London” — The Telegraph

★★★★ “The surprise hit of London’s cheekiest summer opera festival … It is a production full of such simple, carefully-considered points of interpretation.” — WhatsOnStage

★★★★ “Imaginative staging, brilliant acting, superb singing, horrifying finale … a masterclass in restrained intensity” — OneStopArts

★★★★ “Extremely good.” — Evening Standard

Reviews for Werther:

Werther at the @arcolatheatre is the best close-up opera production I’ve ever seen. Book if you can.
