Size Zero Opera

The Viagron / Kettlehead

Directed by: Matthew Monaghan

Size Zero Opera Company present the world premieres of two bold and uncompromising new works of music theatre in a double bill titled Playing With Fire. The two new works will be previewed at the acclaimed Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival, at River Side Studios 8 – 9 August 2013, followed by performances at the Arcola Theatre, 13 – 17 August 2013.

The double bill opens with The Viagron by German composer Arne Gieshoff and librettist Frank Allison, based on the classical Roman text The
by Petronius. Focusing on the sexual misadventures of the impotent central character, Encolpius, the opera presents both his past and
present in an explicit and sometimes humorously vulgar examination of lust
and love set against Gieshoff’s aggressively taught score. The production
is kindly supported by the PRS Foundation.

Pleast note Contains partial nudity and scenes of a sexual nature

The bill is completed by Kettlehead by American composer Darren Bloom
and librettist Neil Georgeson. Set in colonial Africa at the end of the 19th Century, the opera explores a twisted tale of voodoo and revenge focused
on the tragic transformation of a promising young girl into a mutilated
social pariah. The creation of this new work has been supported by the
London Symphony Orchestra’s Sound Hub project.

Opera returns to Arcola Theatre with an expanded Grimeborn Festival, once again featuring a mix of new works with classics and rarely performed works. Now in its seventh year, Grimeborn is dedicated to celebrating the world of Opera while also making it accessible to both new and established audiences.

Grimeborn is bigger than ever before. This year’s festival will take place in both Studios, allowing each production to add more performances. Additionally, there will be a few one-off concerts and operas on selected dates.

“Grimeborn Opera is in serious danger
of becoming a bit of an institution”

Andrew Clements, The Guardian
