Ryedale Festival Opera

The Magic Flute

Mozart Translator John Warrack

Directed by: Nina Brazier

“Evenings like this are too good to miss” York Press

The London transfer of Ryedale Festival Opera’s lively, sell-out production of The Magic Flute.

One of the best-loved operas in history is performed in a brand new English translation by emerging young, talented singers selected from top music colleges including The Royal Academy of Music, The Royal College of Music, Guildhall and the Royal Northern College of Music.

Tamino stumbles into the realm of the Queen of the Night, were he is rescued from a vicious serpent by three ladies. They show him a picture of the beautiful Pamina, the Queen of the Night’s daughter, and he immediately falls in love with her. The Queen appears and tells Tamino he can marry her daughter if she rescues her from the Queen’s enemy. Along with his new acquaintance – the quirky bird-catcher Papageno – and protected by his new magic flute, Tamino sets of on an adventure to rescue his beloved Pamina. However, all is not what it seems and Tamino fights adversity, to not only gain the woman he loves, but to strive for justice for mankind.

Under the baton of Christopher Glynn Artistic Director of the Ryedale Festival and directed by Nina Brazier – whose previous credits for Grimeborn include Time Out Critic’s Choice Spilt Milk & Trouble in Tahiti and The Old Maid and the Thief – “Glorious Grime in Grimeborn” Evening Standard – this promises to be an evening of theatrical and musical delight of an opera which has captivated audiences since 1791.

GRIMEBORN OPERA FESTIVAL

Opera returns to Arcola Theatre with an expanded Grimeborn Festival, once again featuring a mix of new works with classics and rarely performed works. Now in its seventh year, Grimeborn is dedicated to celebrating the world of Opera while also making it accessible to both new and established audiences.

Grimeborn is bigger than ever before. This year’s festival will take place in both Studios, allowing each production to add more performances. Additionally, there will be a few one-off concerts and operas on selected dates.

“Grimeborn Opera is in serious danger
of becoming a bit of an institution”
