Strekoza i Muravej, (Grasshopper and Ant), is a re-imagining of the classic Russian fable, following the lives of the extravagant Strekoza and the dutiful Muravej.
Set in Moscow, our story begins with Strekoza’s (Grasshopper’s) extravagant lifestyle at one of her many parties. As the crowd leaves, we too leave her luxurious life style and cross to the strict scheduled, ever laborious, Muravej, (Ant), who confesses to his close friend, and mutual friend of Strekoza, his love for Strekoza. As the following two scenes unfold, we learn that Strekoza has ever-mounting debt which she is unable to pay which inevitably lands her in squalor: homeless, and with no one to help her. While, Muravej’s rigorous nature affords him a promotion and a new home, the former home of Strekoza. As he finds her ribbon left behind, he goes out to find her dying in the winter streets of Moscow.
Opera returns to Arcola Theatre with an expanded Grimeborn Festival, once again featuring a mix of new works with classics and rarely performed works. Now in its seventh year, Grimeborn is dedicated to celebrating the world of Opera while also making it accessible to both new and established audiences.
Grimeborn is bigger than ever before. This year’s festival will take place in both Studios, allowing each production to add more performances. Additionally, there will be a few one-off concerts and operas on selected dates.
