Writing for Screen

Ever wanted to write a screen play? Over the course of five weeks, this course will introduce you to fundamental tools with which to write your own script for film or television.

Each two-hour workshop will involve a mixture of practical exercises, lively discussion and script readings. Aspiring screen writers will gain tips and advice on a range of fundamental elements: helping them to structure their ideas and develop their craft.

This course will be led by renowned writer, Sasha Hails.

Sasha has just completed a 13 part series of Enid Blyton’s MALORY TOWERS for CBBC, King Bert and DHX with writing partner Rachel Flowerday to broadcast early 2020. Her play POSSESSION will be shown at the Arcola 2021. Other current projects include an adaptation of Richard Llewellyn’s HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY for C5, and an original TV drama THE DROWNED for Kindle/BBC Scotland. She is under commission by The Bureau and BBC films to adapt Max Porters book LANNY for the screen. Recent work includes Netflix/Nutopia THE LAST TZARS released June 2019, and a 5 part adaptation of Wilkie Collin’s MOONSTONE produced by BBC and King Bert with her writing partner Rachel Flowerday. Also episodes of VERSAILLES (canal +) and The Crown (Netflix, Leftbank). She also wrote on Russel T Davies Kids TV series Wizards Versus Aliens. She has been working as a series consultant for HBO EUROPE on several shows including THAW (Poland) LET US KISS (Hungary) and WONDERLAND (Rumania).

Her 2015 episode of Casualty, which addressed FGM on Prime Time TV for the first time, was BAFTA nominated and won a BBC Production Award and a Sexual Health Award. Her Casualty episode on Euthanasia starring Brenda Fricka in 2013 was also BAFTA nominated. Her recent original radio play BEST INTERESTS won a MFI award. Her original radio play MY FRONT LINE starring Fiona Shaw was nominated for a Sony award.

Previous to becoming a writer Sasha was an actress. She starred in the early films of Francois Ozon, including the award winning REGARDE LA MER for which she won a best actress award. She wrote and performed in a large body of work with her award winning company TALKING TONGUES and her acting partner Rachel Weisz, during the 90’s. Sasha has three grown up daughters and lives in London.
