Opera Room

The Invited

Richard Knight and Norman Welch

Directed by: Neil Smith

1916. In rural Suffolk, news arrives of the battle in the Somme.

Sisters Violet and Emily are together in their isolated home – but Violet seems out of sorts. She claims the gods of ancient Greece are returning to cleanse the earth of man’s sin. Emily, a woman of science, claims it is madness. Yet both of them have seen figures in the trees…

The Invited is a new opera by Richard Knight and Norman Welch. Following an acclaimed run at St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, this gripping psychological melodrama comes to Grimeborn for two nights only.

Opera Room‘s ‘classically modern’ work puts a strikingly contemporary edge on the melodies and lyricism of classical opera. Their previous productions include All To Play For, A Broken Heart (a song cycle recorded as an album) and Flat Pack.

The Invited was originally staged at St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, on 14-15 November 2013, in association with Iris Theatre.
