A concert of Kurdish Songs – at 7.30pm

You are invited to SONGS FROM THE MOUNTAINS, a concert of Kurdish Songs organized by Suna Alan (singer, journalist) and Ed Emery (ethnomusicologist).

In addition to the songs, the programme will include an Alevi semah ritual and Kurdish folk dance.

The concert is part of Ed Emery’s Kurdish Songbook project, which is beginning a process of collecting and archiving Kurdish songs, through performance, sound-recording, video recording, and online posting.

Suna Alan is a Kurdish singer and a journalist.
She was born in Çewlik, a Kurdish and ancient Armenian province in Northern Kurdistan (officially Turkey). Her family moved to Smyrna, when she was 2 years old and she spent her childhood and early youth in a multicultural atmosphere. She grew up with the traditional Kurdish dengbêj music and Kurdish-Alevi laments, and was influenced by the music of Smyrna.
She is the lead singer of Raye Band in the UK and is engaged in a variety of causes, including human and women’s rights and the environment.

Ed Emery is an activist, journalist and ethnomusicologist. He is currently engaged in mobilising funding for the creation of a Musical Academy in the newly liberate town of Kobane in northern Syria / Rojava.
