Quotations from Shakespeare on parallel lines

Taking six famous quotations from Shakespeare, this experimental performance offers a new interpretation on each.

Visualizing the prose though movements, sounds and objects, the performance aims to express well-known quotes without using the text directly. It explores their original meaning in unspoken form. Drawing on Duchamp’s concept of rearranging the everyday to uncover the unexpected, the set extends the performance themes, redesigning familiar objects to give a new meaning and function – supporting adaptation of the text.

The UAL Graduates Collaboration brings together an interdisciplinary team working across design areas. Yang Yang (MA PDP, CSM)’s prior projects include Movements, Conflicts, Interactions (2014). Staged at The White Lab, this experimental piece gave new meanings to traditional techniques in Western ballet and Chinese opera. Kheil Xu (Product Design, CSM) used her most recent piece, Hacking the Stationary, to explore repurposing of consumer products, whilst Xin Yu Zhang (Costume Design, London College of Fashion) focuses on the use of sustainable materials in performance. Sarah Sanderson (MA PDP) examines on the use of light and shadow in performance photography.
