“Speaking truth to power: this is the rebirth of political theatre” Michael Billington, Guardian
Arcola Theatre presents the first three nights of The Truth to Power Cafe 2017 beginning a unique six-month journey into the heart of East London, celebrating it as a site of free speech, activism and political dissidence.
Join us each night as six local, brave and honest participants have five minutes to explore power and responsibility in their daily lives by responding to the question: ‘Who has power over you and what do you want to say to them?’ before a live audience.
Speaking truth to power has its origins in anti-war pacifism, and these days it is widely accepted to mean saying something to those in authority or position of trust who don’t want to hear. Is it to your parents, a sibling, a politician, lover, landlord, neighbour, religious leader, boss, banker or simply your best friend? It’s time to tell them the truth before it’s too late.
Over the next six months, The Truth to Power Cafe will visit six venues involving up to 100 participants to launch a series of contemporary events reflecting on Harold Pinter’s Hackney Gang. The series will culminate with the world-premiere of Mick’s Friend by Hackney Gang member Mick Goldstein adapted in a posthumous collaboration by his only son and Cafe host Jeremy, and Henry Woolf who at 87 was also in the Gang. Henry describes the Hackney Gang as a ‘bunch of determined solipsists’ who took on the bullies and fought with fascists and in 2017 the Cafe will do the same.
