Judith: A Parting From The Body

Howard Barker

Directed by: Robyn Winfield-Smith

Coronation Street’s Catherine Cusack (All That Fall, Broadway, Arts Theatre, Jermyn Street; Bingo, CFT & Young Vic) takes on the title role in a timely revival of Barker’s “short, sharp shocker of a play” (WhatsOnStage).

This firecracker adaptation reimagines the apocryphal legend of Judith – the daring widow who, on the night before battle, infiltrates the enemy camp with her Servant to seduce and kill the blood-crazed head of the invading army, Holofernes. Her land is at stake – but what of her heart and mind? In his radical reimagining of a legend, Barker lays bare the complex sacrifices of human beings at war.

This production ran for 4 weeks at the Arcola Theatre as part of a “★★★★ exhilarating and provoking” (The Stage) Howard Barker Double Bill, where it was described by audiences as “one of the best things on the London stage” and by the playwright as “dynamic, intensely-imagined, and chilling”.

A co-production between Lighthouse, Poole and REND Productions.
