Live Art Speed Date Returns!

In collaboration wih Arcola Theatre, we present a warehouse full of the finest artists, theatre makers and performers ready to lay their dates on you. We have commissioned them to create for you a private one-on-one, four minute date.

Upon arrival you are given a Date card (like an old fashioned Dance Card), which you will fill with 'dates'. The dates are distributed through a trading mechanism which resembles a busy day at the NY Stock Exchange, only sexier. Get excited and trade up your date for the one you want.

When not engaged in an official date, you may explore the cavernous Unit K and indulge in all manner of Auto Dates, fringe dates, and other games that will all end, hopefully, in love. Or something like it. Add to this live music, Dj's and a great party.

LASD is a vibrant fairground of private encounters between artist and audience. In a large room artists occupy booths, tables, and dark corners where they perform their four-minute-long ‘date’ to their guest. The audience are given cards for the date they want, and when not ‘dating’ engage in auto-dates and other playful interactions. The whole event is highly charged and opens discussions between audience members as to what they have experienced, examines the phenomenon of the encounter, and tests the boundaries of performance. By socialising the event we turn up the heat on what is ‘private’. That ‘privacy’ can be thought of as ownership of the potential experience, thus the dates are commodified. The ensuing market drives anticipation and increases the perceived value of each encounter. As the reports come back from the dates the private encounter enjoys a second, public life as a myth of itself. Ain’t that cute?

Notes on Live Art Speed Date:

Originally produced for last year's St Valentine's day, LASD has taken on a life of it's own with Dates last year at the Edinburgh Festival and the Dublin Fringe. After this event LASD travels to Tokyo for the British Council's Connected Showcase at TPAM, then at the Camden People's Theatre for the SPRINT festival, in May the Bristol Old Vic for Mayfest (with Forest Fringe) and in the summer you can catch it at BAC for their festival of intimate performance.

Note on Stoke Newington International Airport:

STK was formed in mid 2008 with the mission to open up a place for the local community, artists and anyone else to see performance works of an experimental nature. Since then we have produced over 50 music and performance gigs, held dozens of workshops, and supported hundreds of artists in their performances here. STK is a new model for a totally independent artist led organisation. We produce our own work and promote the work of others, establishing a hub for the live arts in East London.
