Herald Theatre Company In association with the Arcola Theatre English Version by Geoffrey Skelton Verse Adaptation by Adrian Mitchell Directed by Michael Cabot Designers Geraldine Bunzl & Fiona Hankey Lighting Designer Guy Hoare

The Persecution and Assassination of Marat, as performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton, under the direction of the Marquis de Sade.

Originally directed by Peter Brook for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1964, Marat/Sade is regarded as one of the definitive works of twentieth century drama. Influences of Artaud and Brecht lie at the heart of this revolutionary piece in which the cast of twenty-five play the inmates of Charenton, the asylum presided over by the Marquis de Sade. The recreation of events leading up to the death of Jean-Paul Marat is a dark complex tour-de-force.

"The important thing is to pull yourself up by your own hair to turn yourself inside out and see the whole world with fresh eyes." Marat
